Tips for Growing Microgreens

Microgreens are becoming increasingly popular as more people discover the joy of growing their own nutritious and flavourful greens at home.

If you’re new to microgreens, or just looking to improve your skills, here are ten tips to help you get the most out of your microgreen growing experience:

1.) Choose the right seeds: Select seeds that are specifically meant for growing microgreens. Some good options include broccoli, radish, and pea shoots.

2.) Use good quality soil: Invest in a high-quality potting soil that is light and airy. Avoid using garden soil, as it may contain disease-causing organisms.

3.) Keep the soil moist: Water your microgreens regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Use a spray bottle to avoid disturbing the delicate seeds.

4.) Provide adequate light: Microgreens need plenty of light to grow properly. Place them in a sunny spot or use grow lights if you don’t have access to natural sunlight.

5.) Optimise the temperature: Microgreens prefer a temperature range of 15-24°C  (60-75°F). If your home is too cold, consider using a heat mat to provide warmth.

6.) Space them out: Give your microgreens plenty of room to grow by spacing them out in their containers. This will also help prevent mould and disease.

7.) Harvest at the right time: Microgreens are ready to harvest when they have developed their first true leaves. Use sharp scissors to snip them at soil level.

8.) Store properly: Keep your harvested microgreens in a sealed container in the refrigerator. They should last for several days.

9.) Experiment with different varieties: Don’t be afraid to try different types of seeds to find your favourites. Mix and match flavours and textures to create your perfect microgreen salad.
